Ramblings

as the city sleeps

19 October, 2004 (06:35) | Ramblings

As I leave for work in the mornings at 3:45 am, I notice that nothing else is going on.  Even the weather seems to be at rest.  The occasional garbage truck is about the extent of life that i run across.  As i park my car a half mile down the street and begin to walk the rest of the way, i walk by a woman on her smoke break.  puffing along in her over-sized jacket, you know she would love to be at home wrapped in a blanket, knees to her chest.  Or is that just me?  Anyway, the weather seems to be asleep too.  No wind, no rain, and if there is rain, it’s just a light misting, as if the weather crew is just understaffed on the graveyard shift.  and 8 hours later when i leave my 8th floor cavern, the city is transmogrified.  Someone switched on the lights to the sky, turned the knob to the magnetic car track of the city streets, and openned the door to the maze of the city side walks that men in suits traverse throughout their day with a destination in mind, but never really sure how to get there.  I haven’t found anyone i can set my watch to yet though.  That’s what i want to see.  I want to bump into “the parking his car guy” or the “girl who always has an umbrella.”  I have yet to have a repeating face, or atleast a face that stained the memory cells of my brain.  I must admit, I am almost dissappointed.  I want the conveyor belt city.  The well oiled machine, transporting the masses over the cross walk.  Red light.  Green light.  Yield.  No turn on red.  But there are jaywalkers out there.  And those jaywalkers are messing with my life.
