Kallie and I drove to Chicago on Oct 15th for the Urbanathlon on the 16th. We were a little scared about the 7.5 hour drive since our car has been giving us so many (expensive) problems. It lasted though, and hopefully we didn’t shave off too many days of it’s life.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in the West Loop, which was a nice short walk to the starting line. when we got to our room, it was a 2 double bed suite. Whenever something is not as it should be, I let Kallie be in charge. I’m too nice and just suck it up and take the hand I was dealt. Kallie goes to the front desk and she gets us a room with a king bed, the only “downside” is it’s a handicap room. So, where we asked for a different room because we’re tall and need a larger bed, we got a larger bed, but the room has light switches and counters at about half-height. The bathroom was just a big tiled room with a curtain and shower head off to the side. I’ve never seen that before. It was very mental hospital-ish. Whatever though.

The race was fun, but I didn’t get the time I wanted due to muscle cramps around mile 7. It took me nearly an hour to finish the last 2 miles. It was frustrating and embarrassing. I don’t know what caused them. It wasn’t unusually cold and I should have had all the nutrients I needed. I hadn’t had anything like that come up in my training. When I got to the finish line, as I was jumping off the first taxi hood, my right calf cramped and I almost fell on the ground since I could use it to balance when I landed. I also couldn’t get up over the second cab until it stopped, so I just stood there stretching and rubbing it, while all these bystanders looked at me. Ugh. I think the picture to the left sums it up pretty well. Even after the race, just sitting on the ground drinking water, my muscle was cramping. Ridiculous. Nothing I could do about it though, and I raised a bunch of money for the Living Ministry, so it wasn’t about me, it was a race for the ministry. Now it was time to have a great weekend in Chicago with my wife.

So we were going to meet up with Kallie’s cousin, Julia, for lunch. Julia was thinking a place called “The Girl and The Goat” (check out my review) but they were only open for dinner. She also had to work, so that limited our time. What we decided to do was Kallie and I would go to eat dinner, then come see a show, where Julia worked, and then we’d get drinks afterward with her. I’ll tell you more in the reviews of the restaurant and the play “Detroit” at the Steppenwolf theatre (review here), but to sum it up, we had an awesome day. So great. We couldn’t have planned it better ourselves. THANKS, Julia! Sunday morning we got some fruit sushi / frushi at Orange before heading out for home. We had eaten there last year and thought it was so good that we made a point to go back this year. If you’re in the Chicago area, I’d recommend it.

Kallie’s cousin, Julia, works at the Steppenwolf Theatre, and while we were in town, she hooked us up with tickets to see Detroit, by Lisa D’Amour.

First off, Kallie and I had never heard of the theatre, let alone the play. Maybe it’s because we’re not from Chicago, or maybe it’s because we are uncultured neanderthals. Either way, we were thoroughly entertained. The set was beautiful and even the theatre itself told me that I’m in a place that’s taken seriously. As I browse the program, I see that Gary Sinese and 2 friends started the company back in the 70s, and now there’s a ensemble of MANY familiar faces! I was very impressed, to the point where I felt ashamed I didn’t know anything about this place before hand! I would think a place with the caliber of it’s ensemble would be as well known as Second City (which we tried to get tickets for, but they were sold old 3 days out).

To the actual play, a cast of 4, most recognized by Laurie Metcalf (Jackie from Roseanne), Detroit is a play that tackles very modern american ideals and circumstances. A long time married couple without children in the suburbs of Detroit struggle in their relationship while a younger, recently clean and sober, couple moves into the house next door. There are some great laughs, but it also has a lot of deep meaning. Something I’ve never heard of before, after the play, they have a discussion group with an assistant producer of the play. They talk about the characters, how the definition of the American dream has changed, and what changes we saw in the characters. It was awesome. Kind of like a college class, with a bunch of old people in it.

It was a great play, a great place, and a great night. Consider it RECOMMENDED.

Related: Detroit is a focus for Palladium and Johnny Knoxville in their exploration how Detroit Lives – http://www.palladiumboots.com/explorations

So, I called this Girl and the Goat place after looking online and seeing they were booked for 2 weeks out. They did have a cancellation at 11:30pm if I wanted that. I had just read an interesting article about getting into elite restaurants, and was excited to try my hand at some of the tactics. The first one, is just show up. They opened at 4:30, and we got there around 4:50. We got seated right away, but at a table for 8 they call the lounge. It’s actually a pretty sweet idea. It’s a very wide table, and couples sit next to each other. We were seated at one end, and a guy and his son were at the other end across the table.

The menu was “interesting” to me. I’m not all that adventurous with food, so I look for familiar things on menus. There was a lot on the menu that I wasn’t sure what it was, let alone if I’d even like it. I found a few things that I would be comfortable with though. It is served “small plate” style, so you order like 3 different items and split it between the 2 of you. So we got the ravioli, the mussels, and skirt steak. I also had been told by a few friends to try the Golden Monkey from Voodoo Brewery, so since I saw it, I got one of those as well. Later, I also downed an Left Hand Brewery Polestar Pilsner. Left Hand has a dear place in my heart, originally just because of the name, but I really like their beer.

Anyway, back to Girl and the Goat. As they’re bringing out food to Tony (the guy at the other end of the table) and his son, the server is giving him the full schpeel about what it is, what Chicago Magazine had to say about it, and used a bunch of colorful adjectives to describe what went into it, almost as if Tony was a food critic. There was too much laughing and smiling about it though, as it turns out, Tony was an employee just stopping in with his son. Tony strikes up a conversation with us, and tells us about the sharing food idea, and he said that a little known secret is to use the sauce from the mussels with the fries, which he had, so we ended up putting the dishes together. As we’re doing this, 2 other couples join our table and join in on the plate sharing. Tony ended up passing around his extra lamb shank. It was soooooo good. Everything was so good. I have no idea what was on the skirt steak, but it was awesome. This could very well have been the best food I’ve ever eaten in one sitting, and I don’t usually get excited about food.

One dish had brussel sprout leaves in it, and since Kallie has been growing brussel sprouts, she asked Tony and our waiter if it was indeed the leaves of the brussel sprouts, or if they were the bigger leaves of the brussel sprout plant itself. Tony said that particular dish was just the sprouts, but there was another dish that had the large leaves. We ordered that so Kallie can see if it’s something she wants to learn how to make. A few minutes later, our waiter brought the owner, Stephanie Izard. Wow, what a surprise. The waiter was just so surprised about Kallie growing brussel sprouts, that he asked Steph to come out and share the recipe with us. It was a short conversation, and you could tell she was very involved in taking care of the restaurant, but it was an awesome surprise.

This place was awesome. The food, the staff, the atmosphere were all exceptional. It was a little on the pricey side for small plate, but it’s one of those great date dinners where you get dressed up for a night out.

I’ll give it 10 feet out of 10 (that’s a good thing). If you’re in Chicago, GO.

I’ve had a few people tell me that my goal was too low, and to get people involved, they needed more of a challenge. I did say more than $1000…but since we’re half way to the race, it seems fitting that the goal is to reach $1500 total, so we’re already more than half-way there!

I forgot to share a video from last year that my friend made of my friend Tim and I doing the race:

I also wanted to let you know that the ministry is holding car washes this Saturday, Sept 11th at the Busy Beaver in Century III and in Crafton. Feel free to stop by, get your car washed, and see all the people that come out to support the ministry.

I’ve also been selected by Pittsburgh City Living to be the Ambassador to the Hill District! Not sure what that means exactly yet, but it’s a city program to showcase all the individual neighborhoods of the city. Hopefully I’ll be able to contribute to the growth of the Hill!

This summer has been a whirlwind of activity. We’ve been to California and back twice in July, a couple weddings around the state, heading to Canada/Yankanuck next week, went camping in Ohio and went to Cedar Point, back to Bedford for our 1 year anniversary, and just a bunch of other stuff that filled our calendars and put smiles on our faces. I think next year we’re going to really protect our weekends and time together. We had fun this year, but it was way too chaotic, and we even cut out a lot things as it was.

Back to real life, Kallie’s down to part-time work and full time student to get her NP license. Since she’s doing that, I am also heading back to RMU for my masters in organizational studies. We’re looking at 2-3 years for us to finish those up. Work is reimbursing me as long as I get above a C, and I need above a 3.00 GPA to graduate, so I should have some motivation there.

I’m training for the urbanathlon again in October. Probably doing a 5k in Charleroi and the Great Race 10k before then in preparation. I’m going to try to fund-raise for the L.i.v.i.n.g. Ministry again this year too. A lot going on with the ministry, and they could surely use the support!

I think after the race, I’m going to focus on music, playing out, writing songs, etc to carry me through the winter. Hopefully I’ll be able to follow through on that one…I’ll keep you posted

I guess it’s time for one of these. I didn’t post anything in may, so let’s see…

New job…is rough at times. No the work itself, but the people I work with. There’s some serious tension in the group, and I don’t see it getting any better until *something* gives. It’s a little ridiculous and unprofessional at times. Not to mention I didn’t get the raise I was looking for. It’s work though, and it’s a good place to be to make a move when I decide the time is right.

I’ve decided to make a summer goal of getting in shape for the urbanathlon in new york on september 27th. andy vargo did it last year in chicago, and it really piqued my interest. It’s a 7.2 mile race, but throughout the course, there are obstacles like jumping over taxi hoods, and median barriers, and park walls and such, and then at the end you have to run up 52 flights of stairs at world trade tower 7, so it works out to some 8.5 miles. Pretty intense, right? I think it will be awesome. I’m not trying to compete, just finish it. If I can get myself in shape for this thing, I’m really curious to see how I’ll look and feel. I really will be in the best shape I’ve ever been in.

I’ve also picked up fencing lessons in the past few weeks. Chris Olivieri asked me how much of a geek I was when he called me one day, and I said high to moderate levels of geekiness were seen, and then he asked me if i wanted to take fencing lessons. I busted out laughing. It’s actually pretty intense and fun. I do feel like I’m learning a new skill, and I’m definitely getting a leg work out. I could definitely see myself keeping a set of foils and masks in my closet for some outdoors fencing with friends. I’ve done 2 out of 8 classes, so next time I should have a better idea of how good I am.

As far as music goes, nothing formal done with the penguins games going on. I’ll pick up some open mic shows next week and keep those going and I’d like to just have some jam sessions with redfield and see where things go from there. We were asked to play the cornerstone kick off on sunday august 24th, and that will be awesome if everyone works out. It would be right in the bellefield parking lot, right across from the towers in oakland, and our music would permeate all the dorms and such. I’m hoping everything goes well.

Nothing too much planned for the summer, have some vacation time, but I don’t think I’ll go anywhere. It’s time to save money, and I traveled way too much last year. Time to work on the homestead and read some books and such.

Still can feel the ankle being a little weak, but i like to push it. Probably try and run a little later in the week. Not working out for the past 2 months is not good!

Ticket bought for italy with the family. I’m flying over wed may 16th and leaving saturday the 26th. during that time, i plan on taking a trip to paris and london as well since it’ll be so cheap to do so and i won’t want to spend so much time in italy. I’m excited!

took a road trip with friends to philly this weekend to a beer fest. Not really my scene, but we ended up having a really great time. Lots of friendship bonding and such. I need to get a camera. I wanted to wait until right before italy, but as soon as i pay off money that i owe to the estate and to j’aime for the italy ticket, i’ll get one as soon as i see the need and a good deal.

Rachel met my mother and Deirdre last wednesday when we went back home to see Deirdre as Mame in the musical Mame. So much talent there. It was weird seeing Rachel hug my mother though……..heh. Hi mom

One of the new housemates, craig, moved in yesterday. Pretty cool dude. He just proposed to his girlfriend of 5 years over the weekend too. Both are from Morgantown, transplanted to chicago, and now moving back. Craig will stick around til at least sometime april as they both find new living quarters, and I’m glad to have him/them. The other dude, Alex, has an architecture internship from march 17th-june 17th, and he’ll live across the hall from me. ’bout time that room got some good use.

I’m just sitting here thinking how fast money goes down the drain. since i’m not taking classes this semester, my school loans picked up payments, then i have the truck registration and inspection coming up, estate money i owe, tickets to italy, doctor bills from the ankle, blah blah blah. Why am i always feeling like i live paycheck to paycheck? I shouldnt have that.

well, got my cast off. I got this big ‘ol boot now though. It’s actually pretty nice though. It has a rounded bottom and lots of straps and it distributes weight load from my foot to my shin and lower leg. The doc said i should still stay off it and use crutches for another 2 weeks, but i vetoed that. What’s the permanent damage you speak of? I feel liberated! I probably will wear the boot for the rest of the month though. it’s still too swollen for shoes, and doesnt feel safe walking without added support.

UK trip for work is off. Found out that with my boss and his boss going, they were going to deplete the budget, so no trip for me. It’s cool though, i was prepared for it. I had made a mental decision that if i got to go, i’d be more dedicated to sticking around longer because they valued me. With another peer moving on to another department who has been in my position a month less than I have, which means he had to get manager’s approval, this after i was denied approval for a move back in november, i’m pretty sure i’ll be heading out sooner than later.

really behind on recording now. I don’t know when the next time i’ll be able to dedicate time to finish songs for this month. I have valentines this wednesday, have some plans for that in the works. I’ve never been one for valentines day, but that is usually because i’m expected to do something. With Rachel, it’s different. I know that she’d appreciate me if I did nothing at all, which makes me want to do so much more. heh. Hopefully the weather will hold out to make it an enjoyable night. I met her brother last week. Pretty cool dude. We had a lot in common. I don’t want to say he’s a geek, but he knows his IT, and that’s A-O-K with me.

Jordan’s moving out by the end of the month. Found a guy in chicago that seems nice enough who needs a place until april. So, it’s a band-aid, but it will buy me some time to find someone else, and also puts me in a better spot since people will be looking for summer housing.
