Merry Christmas!

Still doesn’t quite feel like Christmas without cold temperatures and some snow or frost. I think there are less public decorations than normal too. I haven’t noticed many street lamp signs or flags or trees or lights. Maybe I just need to get out more.

I got to sleep a bunch today. I woke up in a good mood and ready to face the day. Got a lot of smaller things crossed off my to-do list.

I headed down to J’aime’s for dinner with the local fam and Uncle Jay and Aunt Leslie too. I didn’t get to see them too much because I was building a nice LEGO car with David. He’s getting the hang of putting a set together, but he needs some help here and there. I also watched Dan play video games for a bit, but he’s not very good and I don’t get a turn. It’s kind of like a symbiotic relationship though, I get to watch and yell at him, and he gets to play and take the verbal abuse. I think it works for us.

Kallie comes back late Tuesday, so hopefully I’ll be able to meet up with Uncle Jay and Aunt Leslie again when she’s back. I’m off work Thursday and Friday, so we should have some time to spend together too.

I’m off work tomorrow, hopfully the home depot employees are not. I’d like to get some painting done before Kallie gets here. I hoping to get that done tomorrow, and then reserve Tuesday night after work to cleaning up this disaster area the house is right now.

today was an emotionally draining day. all is well though. slept at my mom’s last night, woke up to return to the city around 10. Brought a dolly back from my mom’s to help me wheel in the deep freezer i bought off craigslist yesterday. I always told kallie that we can justify more freezer space when there were more than just 2 of us. When she told me she was pregnant, I knew I had to make good on that promise.

Deirdre came over around noon and we talked and kind of caught up on what’s been going on with each other.

It doesn’t even feel like Christmas eve. It’s silly warm outside. Without anyone else reminding me about it, it’s easily forgotten.

Talked to Kallie for a bit around 4:30. She comes back late Tuesday night and I think we both want it to come quickly.

I was supposed to play bass at church tonight, but they couldn’t get a drummer, so it didn’t really make sense for me to play. As a result, I lost motivation to go as our holiday services are usually pretty thin. I want to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but I need to find my own way to do that it seems because just going through the motions, traditions, and symbolic rituals seem to distract me from the tangible reality of the coming of our Savior.

I’m starting to think more about my daughter. I’ve been focusing on having a baby, that i’d have to feed, change diapers, and all that jazz. I was also aware of the stress of having a teenage daughter, keeping away the boys, but what I’ve forgotten about is that time in the middle. There’s going to be a girl that will instinctively look to me for direction and also admire me, provided I do my job right. I’m going to have a relationship with this girl. I’m going to want to make her happy, I’m going to love her, and she’ll love me. I’m going to have to learn about her, what she likes, what interests her. It’s not just me changing her diapers or telling her what to do, it’s relational and even more organic than a rule setting father. I decided I wanted to buy her a stuffed animal. I want her to have something that she connects as being given to her from her dad[ddy].

I started repairing some damage ceiling parts in the office, started tearing down some stuff, but then realized the last time I used the joint compound, the lid was on tightly and it all dried up. Quick hop online found that home depot is closed until Monday. I had been hoping to get some painting done today and tomorrow so it would be dry by the time Kallie came back and the fumes would be gone. Not sure what I’m going to do about that yet. I started doing some other things on my list, but I’m really quite exhausted already.

9pm – I’m spent. Merry Christmas to everyone. Good night.

I’m being super proactive and structured while Kallie is out in California for a week. My default has been to do nothing, get mopey and grumpy, and sleep a lot. I’m going to try to have a very productive and also entertaining week while I’m by myself. The reality of this probably being one of the last weeks on my own for a very long time is certainly in the air. I’ve had many people warn me to get any projects done around the house, because once the baby comes, you have no time for anything. Here’s a recap of Day 1:

5:45am – Wake up to drop Kallie off at the airport

7:00am – Arrive back home, take a nap before work

9:30am – Wake up and realize you should already be at work. Oops.

5:00pm – Come home, watch the movie ” The Number 23” – A quick review: This has so many qualities of the psychological thrillers I love. I am so inspired to write stories after watching this movie. I identified with the character so much, and having the premise of the movie being the main character identifying with a “fictional” character in a book just drew me in further and deeper. No way Kallie would have enjoyed that one.

7:00pm – Do the dishes, tidy up a bit.

8:00pm – Build the LEGO Ferrari Racer – My mother in law is basically my LEGO supplier, and she’s usually good for awesome bulk collections, but this collection had the book and pretty much all the pieces to this amazing set, so I put it together. It’s so awesome. It’s hard to tell the size from the picture, but it’s a hefty foot long. It looks and feels just like a model. I think I’ll even leave it together for a bit.

9:00pm – Sort the rest of the LEGO bricks I got for Christmas while watching the SNL Christmas special.

11:00pm – Do some pushups, write some emails, surf around a bit, quick devotional, bed by midnight!

Look for a daily log for the week while Kallie is gone, hopefully to keep me honest and motivated by fear of man…or something.

It looked terrible. I don’t have enough of the moss/vine/accent pieces, and I certainly don’t have enough flat green pieces. So, I scratched that and created the stocking. It’s about 8 inches tall, and I wish I could have made it bigger, but guess what, I ran out of red 2×4 blocks. I was happy with how smooth it looks though.

Once that was up for a week or so, I wanted to create some other pieces since it looked lonely.

Note to self – Call off work the month of December. You will not be able to get anyone to do any work, even if they are in the office, so just avoid the frustration completely. That’s basically how I feel right now. I had my first project fail last Saturday, and now I have to finish it tomorrow, when I was supposed to be off. and when I say "have to" I mean, failure is not an option with this project. I coined a new phrase with this project, "Screw dotting my i’s and crossing my t’s, I’M JUST GOING TO WRITE IN ALL CAPS."

How about that open mic that Ben and I were supposed to play last week didn’t happen. The BBT, or Bloomfield Bridge Tavern actually had a fire back in October and they’ve been closed for repair, even though they still have shows booked on their site. Oh well. We ended going over to Jordan’s and just playing there for some friends.

Speaking of going over to Jordan’s, we had our first Beer snob Christmas party this past Tuesday. I think there were 12 of us total, all brought a case of a micro brew or import beer and we went around swapping bottles to build our own mixed case. Lots of fun. I took a mix case of Left Hand Brewing. I had an ESB at in philly and really enjoyed it, and come on, it’s a left hand. You had me at "Hello."

I’m off to Kallie’s Mom’s place near Sacremento from the 24th until the 30th. So crazy to be in a relationship where our families are across the country from one another. It’s sure fun at times, but there are certainly downsides. Not sure of any plans yet, just spending time with family in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and probably Lake Tahoe too. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures.

Aside from that, I’ve been getting involved with a small group from Bellefield and going to the Open Door. Probably look to get baptized (finally) in the new year. Keren just got baptized last week, and it was a pretty emotional thing for sure. I’m so blessed to have such a great family and great support structure.

If there’s one thing that I hate most, it’s when people tell me things have to be a certain way, "just because." This post is not directed at any 1 person, but at 1 particular thought. When someone says that gift cards are cheating or call me lazy for giving gift cards, what they are not realizing is that their own actions are offensive to me. I’ll try to keep my defense of the gift card in a bulleted list.

What if I really want to give you a gift card? A spa treatment, a favorite restaurant, a specialty store, wherever. Are you going to say that my gift is not good enough? I didn’t just reach my hand in a bag and pull out a gift card to toys r’ us, I put thought into where I thought you’d want to spend money. How dare you call me unthoughtful.

Maybe I can’t afford what I really want to get you, but I want to contribute. Maybe when I give it to you, I’ll say, "maybe it’ll help you get that new flatscreen TV you want." Or maybe, if enough people give you gift cards, there will be enough to get you that flatscreen you wanted, free of charge.

Maybe I want you to have freedom. We’ve all received gifts we didn’t want. Maybe I know you’re a tightwad and you won’t spend you own money on something you like, so here, go on a shopping spree on me. Sometimes I feel like I’m imposing my thoughts of the person on them when I buy them a gift. I don’t want to be a control freak, I want you to enjoy something.

It’s convenient. I’m not going to lie, that’s a major appeal to gift cards. You know where they are, where you want to go, how much you want to spend, and you’re in and out of where ever it is, avoiding all the crazy shoppers. Gift cards are easily shipped if you need to get something online so that opens up options tremendously. It’s also easy to travel with gift cards for 20 people than it is with 20 wrapped gifts.

And to debunk the nay-sayers:

Gift cards are impersonal – well, personalize your gift cards then.

Gift cards are not thoughtful enough – A valid concern and risk. Let’s look at ourselves before we accuse others though. Is there a way you can make it easier for someone to get you a gift? Maybe drop them hints. Sometimes, they don’t know you enough to get you something, and sometimes, you’re too rigid for them to risk getting you something that you might not like…like a gift card.

It’s cheating – Really? Since when did giving and receiving gifts become a competition? Maybe you should be glad that the person stuck it to the man and didn’t spend have to spend a dime on you because their credit card points paid for your $100 gift card. Sure, they could have used it themselves, but they chose to give it to you. Ungrateful. In these tough economic times, maybe a little cheating by buying gift certificates at grocery stores like Giant Eagle for all sorts of places is in order since it gives the buyer credit card rewards as well as gas points. That’s a smart shopper if you ask me.

It’s such a waste since gift cards often go unused – True Story. Whose fault is that though? Maybe the receiver was too lazy or caught up in their own arrogance and distaste for gift cards that they didn’t use it. If I give a gift card to someone, I ask them later on how they spent it, to make sure they did enjoy it, and also next year, maybe i’ll have an idea of something to give them.

The neutralizers, or reasons I can understand:

It’s not pretty. You’re right. You can dress it up and go over the top if you really want to though. Wrapping paper is such a waste though. Not only does all that cost ridiculous amounts of money for all the fixings, but you just tear it up and throw it away. Let’s stop the waste before we even get to recycling by reducing our output. There’s just something sentimental about unwrapping a nice present though.

It can be last minute. It doesn’t have to be though. I don’t think gift cards should be someone’s bread and butter every christmas and for everyone. But the generalized statement shouldn’t ruin the good that can come from gift cards.

Gift cards are mass produced. Definitely something to consider. I’m all for supporting local businesses and small shops and artists when possible. You walk a thin line to consumer whoring, but with a little tact, you should be fine.

I’m a little frustrated with group think, I think you can tell. When email first came around, do you think people said, "oh my, don’t email me, write me a letter, that’s how it should be done." You bet your arse they did. Does that mean they were wrong? No, but it doesn’t mean it was right either. People have opinions, and people have feelings. Sometimes the two collide. You can either learn to love people for their difference of opinions, or try and change them. How about you work on the gift of understanding, K?

Another similar place that I want to stay is the Greenbrier in White Sulfur Springs, WV. It has a long and luxorious history much like Bedford springs, but it has an awesome underground bunker that was to be used by the government during the Cold War. How awesome is that?
