Kallie and I drove to Chicago on Oct 15th for the Urbanathlon on the 16th. We were a little scared about the 7.5 hour drive since our car has been giving us so many (expensive) problems. It lasted though, and hopefully we didn’t shave off too many days of it’s life.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in the West Loop, which was a nice short walk to the starting line. when we got to our room, it was a 2 double bed suite. Whenever something is not as it should be, I let Kallie be in charge. I’m too nice and just suck it up and take the hand I was dealt. Kallie goes to the front desk and she gets us a room with a king bed, the only “downside” is it’s a handicap room. So, where we asked for a different room because we’re tall and need a larger bed, we got a larger bed, but the room has light switches and counters at about half-height. The bathroom was just a big tiled room with a curtain and shower head off to the side. I’ve never seen that before. It was very mental hospital-ish. Whatever though.

The race was fun, but I didn’t get the time I wanted due to muscle cramps around mile 7. It took me nearly an hour to finish the last 2 miles. It was frustrating and embarrassing. I don’t know what caused them. It wasn’t unusually cold and I should have had all the nutrients I needed. I hadn’t had anything like that come up in my training. When I got to the finish line, as I was jumping off the first taxi hood, my right calf cramped and I almost fell on the ground since I could use it to balance when I landed. I also couldn’t get up over the second cab until it stopped, so I just stood there stretching and rubbing it, while all these bystanders looked at me. Ugh. I think the picture to the left sums it up pretty well. Even after the race, just sitting on the ground drinking water, my muscle was cramping. Ridiculous. Nothing I could do about it though, and I raised a bunch of money for the Living Ministry, so it wasn’t about me, it was a race for the ministry. Now it was time to have a great weekend in Chicago with my wife.

So we were going to meet up with Kallie’s cousin, Julia, for lunch. Julia was thinking a place called “The Girl and The Goat” (check out my review) but they were only open for dinner. She also had to work, so that limited our time. What we decided to do was Kallie and I would go to eat dinner, then come see a show, where Julia worked, and then we’d get drinks afterward with her. I’ll tell you more in the reviews of the restaurant and the play “Detroit” at the Steppenwolf theatre (review here), but to sum it up, we had an awesome day. So great. We couldn’t have planned it better ourselves. THANKS, Julia! Sunday morning we got some fruit sushi / frushi at Orange before heading out for home. We had eaten there last year and thought it was so good that we made a point to go back this year. If you’re in the Chicago area, I’d recommend it.

Thank you so much for your gifts and your words of encouragement, Everyone! We’re about a month away from the race, and I’m getting stoked. It’s not here yet though, and that’s good because I haven’t met my goal yet!

I’ve had a few people tell me that my goal was too low, and to get people involved, they needed more of a challenge. I did say more than $1000…but since we’re half way to the race, it seems fitting that the goal is to reach $1500 total, so we’re already more than half-way there!

I forgot to share a video from last year that my friend made of my friend Tim and I doing the race:

if the embedded video doesn’t work, you can watch it here: http://www.vimeo.com/7305447

I also wanted to let you know that the ministry is holding car washes this Saturday, Sept 11th at the Busy Beaver in Century III and in Crafton. Feel free to stop by, get your car washed, and see all the people that come out to support the ministry.

You can make an online payment with paypal by clicking on the “donate now” button on http://livingministry.org/blog/
or
You can mail your checks to:

Again, thank you to those who have already donated and thank you so much to those who replied back to me with encouraging words and support in the race.

Peace, Love, and Ambition,

If you’re not familiar with the L.I.V.I.N.G Ministry, it’s an organization dedicated to serving the homeless and needy in the Pittsburgh area. They have a few outreach programs that range from a large clothing drive event in the fall, job fairs, preparing breakfast for labor hall workers at 5am, Bible studies, and the biggest is Project L.I.F.E. With Project L.I.F.E., 4 men are able to live in a house, that the ministry bought and renovated, and focus on building life skills such as budgeting and cooking, they rebuild relationships with their families, and they also learn discipleship. The ministry just bought the house next door and they are working on renovating it with a similar plan in mind for it.

As for the race, on Saturday, October 16th, I’ll be in Chicago for the Men’s Health Urbanathlon. I ran the 12 mile course last year, but this year they changed it to 9 miles and added more obstacles…like getting up and over a bus. Throughout the course, I’ll be climbing over marine hurdles, over taxi cabs, and up and down the stairs of Soldier Field (where the Chicago Bears play).

My goal is to raise more than $1000. If you can make a flat donation of any amount, that will help me reach that goal. If you want to get inside my head for a bit of motivation, you can do something like:

Give me $1 for every second under last year’s time (120 minutes.)

Since I’m also racing in the Great Race again this year, $1 for every second off my total time there (60 minutes)

Give me a big bonus if I run the Urbanathlon in a mile/minute time that is better than my Great Race average mile/minute this year.

Get creative!

If you’re not able to support me financially, some words of encouragement go a long way as well. If you want to learn more about the ministry, or possibly getting your church involved in volunteer workdays, reach out to volunteer@livingministry.org. I’ll be glad to talk with you as the chair of the board for the ministry too, if you have any questions or want to become a regular supporter. Please send this to anyone who you think would like to participate!

Here is the link to make online donations: http://www.changingthepresent.org/drives/show/2177

If you would like to send a check in the mail, write “Josh’s race” in the memo of the check and send to:

Living Ministry

Thank you all for your support, encouragement, and prayers!

I’ve also been selected by Pittsburgh City Living to be the Ambassador to the Hill District! Not sure what that means exactly yet, but it’s a city program to showcase all the individual neighborhoods of the city. Hopefully I’ll be able to contribute to the growth of the Hill!

This summer has been a whirlwind of activity. We’ve been to California and back twice in July, a couple weddings around the state, heading to Canada/Yankanuck next week, went camping in Ohio and went to Cedar Point, back to Bedford for our 1 year anniversary, and just a bunch of other stuff that filled our calendars and put smiles on our faces. I think next year we’re going to really protect our weekends and time together. We had fun this year, but it was way too chaotic, and we even cut out a lot things as it was.

Back to real life, Kallie’s down to part-time work and full time student to get her NP license. Since she’s doing that, I am also heading back to RMU for my masters in organizational studies. We’re looking at 2-3 years for us to finish those up. Work is reimbursing me as long as I get above a C, and I need above a 3.00 GPA to graduate, so I should have some motivation there.

I’m training for the urbanathlon again in October. Probably doing a 5k in Charleroi and the Great Race 10k before then in preparation. I’m going to try to fund-raise for the L.i.v.i.n.g. Ministry again this year too. A lot going on with the ministry, and they could surely use the support!

I think after the race, I’m going to focus on music, playing out, writing songs, etc to carry me through the winter. Hopefully I’ll be able to follow through on that one…I’ll keep you posted

So I got a pairs of the Vibram Five Finger KSOs out of curiosity. I tried grabbing a pair in stores, but no one had any stock left, at least in my size. I was able to try on a size close to mine, so I could go online and order direct. Even online was out of stock of the styles I wanted.

About the shoes specifically, the soles were thinner than I expected. Because they were so thin, I would think that the material would be harder/firmer, but it’s not really. It’s still very flexible, which I can’t knock since it will only add to the purpose of being able to use your toes individually.

So my first run was a little awkward. Not physically, but mentally. You have to get used to the sensation of running at a fast pace bare foot. I can’t remember the last time I’ve done that. I wasn’t expecting to be able to feel the cracks and separations in the sidewalk or the sewer grates. Even the manhole covers are a new sensation. I’m no longer putting flat surface to flat surface, which, I realize, is the point.

As a result, the shoes do get you to run on the balls of your feet. I’ve been doing that all along, so that wasn’t a new pain to learn, but having the ability to react quicker as a result was. Where I used to hit the corner of the curb and just naturally “see-saw” to the flat surface, I’m actually responding to the ledge and balancing and grabbing on with my toes. After my first 4.5 mile run, the bottom of my calves were sore for 2 days. After the 2nd run, which I ran much faster, my calves were sore immediately. Pain means they’re working, right?

I do all of my running in the city. There’s a track up at schenley that i can use, but I rarely do. I like the different terrain. I think that the vibrams would benefit from a softer surface like a clay track, but I also think their dynamic intent would be wasted there.

Over all, I think they’re working, and for the moment, they’re a little bit of a motivator to run since I’m ostentatious and enjoy people giving me weird looks and asking me what they are. Once the novelty wears off though, I see myself going back, or at least sharing time, with traditional running shoes. Even the guy at Elite Runners suggested that they’re not an end all. I’ll ride out this season on them, with the Urbanathlon in October, and we’ll see if switching back becomes less agreeable.

My how the time flies. I was originally going to title this post “Wake me up, when September ends” but we’re way past that point already. The alarm has been ringing all month long for me to wake from my slumber, but I’ve been dreaming and watching everything move at the speed of life.

First off, the race went very well. I did it in just under 2 hours and andy did it in just over 80 minutes. I learned that I do not have the mind of a competitive runner that day. I definitely want to keep working and pushing my physical abilities though. I’m hoping for an 80 minute run next year. I was able to clear the taxi at the end though, something that I guess no one else was able to do. Here’s a picture of that.

Things with Kallie continue to grow. She got a job here in the ER at Children’s Hospital and starts November 10th. She’s also got a nice place a few blocks from my house in the Bedford hill apartments. We’ve been traveling since she’s come here, so we haven’t had a chance to find a church together yet, but it’s certainly a top priority. She still has a lot of logistics on her plate, and I’m sure she misses everyone from Philly, so I’m trying to stay supportive, encouraging, and respectful. I am finding that I can suck at all 3 of those.

How about 4 people I know got engaged 2 weekends ago? Tis the season? Keren was one of them. They’re planning their big fat greek wedding already. Sounds…interesting.

I’ve just been so jammed packed with activity and travel that I haven’t had much time for music or for trying for my MBA. Work has been stressful as well with the market in the shape it’s in. More updates to come as they are revealed.

Birthday is coming up…turning 26…I was telling Kallie the other day, I’m actually feeling good about this birthday, and that’s highly uncharacteristic of me. I’m seeing 26 as a point of distinguished and responsible status and I’m happy to reach that level. No definite plans though, usually I take the week off and travel somewhere, but I don’t think I have money for that this year, with that $1500 truck bill I had last month. I really have to track down those holes in my pockets…
