Hall’s Rule of Social Order – #129

Hospitals are businesses.

They’re not just there to make you feel better.  They are run like businesses.  They worry about low overhead and getting customers in and out as quickly as possible.  Are you aware that 1 in 3 births that occur in a hospital result in a Cesarian section?  That’s a 50% increase since 1996.  Are we to assume woman are just getting riskier at normal deliveries?  Seeing that other countries, even 3rd world countries are half that rate, I don’t think that holds water.

Color me a conspiracy theorist, but C sections are just good business for hospitals.  The procedure is quicker, they keep you longer in recovery, they have more control over the outcomes, and they obviously get to charge you more for doing “more”.  It’s not just c sections though, there’s the whole racket with insurance companies where they can charge $129 for a “mucous recovery system” AKA: a box of Kleenex.
