How to manually install apps to your Iphone like Cydia and SSH (OpenSSH)

12 February, 2011 (12:00) | FYI/DIY

after a botched update to some apps, Cydia would not longer launch completely. Cydia would crash when I tried to open it, even after rebooting.

First, I got DiskAid from : http://www.digidna.net/products/diskaid
Second, connect the iphone to your computer and using DiskAid, remove the numbered and tmp files from /var/lib/dpkg/updates/  – (This may be enough to resolve your problem.  Try a reboot and open Cydia again)

Third, I don’t have SSH installed on the phone.  These steps could also work if you don’t have WiFi to use OpenSSH.  I downloaded Universal Extractor:  http://legroom.net/software/uniextract.  That will let you extract .deb files

Fourth, download the latest Cydia .deb file from http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7/debs/

Fifth, extract those files to your desktop and then copy them over to your phone in the appropriate paths using DiskAid  (you’re basically just manually extracting the files)

Sixth, reboot and try again.  Good Luck!

The disclaimer here is that you’re just overwriting files and not editing them.  SAVE BACK UPS OF ANYTHING YOU ARE OVERWRITING!

Wax Poetic

Winter

10 February, 2011 (12:00) | Wax Poetic

White fields where three white-tailed deer trot,
And the snow covered branches of 2 trees that used to hold a cot.
How can so much liveliness cease to make a sound?
How can the snow flake silently touch the ground?

The country house door flies open as 2 bundles of youthful life run out.
With red cotton jackets, and mittens and caps that Mother yarned together.
The giggles of the children, and the joy of the scene of snow all about,
Breaks the almost eerie silence, as a snow flake touched the ground like a feather.

After a snowman is constructed, and a few hand-packed snowballs thrown,
The laughter stops as Mother brings out a thermos of warm hot-chocolate, out of their warm country home.
Sitting on the top step of the house porch, they lift mugs to almost lip-height,
And slowly sip away because when it is just a little too hot, it is just right.

The red in their cheeks match their new red jackets that keep them warm.
Mother knows that it is time to come back inside, and sit by the fire,
And once toes are unfroze, they will sit by the window and watch their snowman deform,
Fluffier, puffier, fatter and higher.

As night falls, the snow flakes still never stop falling.
And by morning, a new white covered field will be calling.
Calling to the young children who haven’t heard the sound,
The sound a snowflake makes, when it gently touches the ground.

LEGO class builds me up

9 February, 2011 (18:18) | Little Things

Last year they didn’t have the class, but after 2 years, I walk back in to the class, see a few familiar faces, and all of them remember me.  They asked me if I’m bringing back in my large LEGO man I brought in for them last time.  They remember the class and what we did and want to know if we’re going to build a solid block of LEGO again to stand on.  Kids can be awesome.

House Ideas

Everything’s alright. Stuffed animals are always right

3 February, 2011 (12:00) | House Ideas

I don’t know what the fascination is, but I really like over-sized stuffed animals.  I think that the attraction to bean bags and other large soft cushy surfaces are coming from the same neurological wiring.  I’d love to have a room with a huge couch or stuffed animal surface place thing area.  Yeah, you know what that means.

Thanks to Beckie Hollerman for reminding me that today, the first Tuesday of February, should be used to educate ourselves about common misconceptions!
